3. To address the most important needs of Ohio citizens, Extension needs to...
# Response
be technology savvy
Be open one night a week at least until 7pm. The same night every week. All the county offices should be open one night a week. People that are NOT full time farmers or retired need to be able to receive help from our office. Most people work out of the county and don't get home till 6 or 7.
maintain a strong presence in the counties.
I'm not sure I agree that we need to address the most important needs of Ohio citizens. We can address important needs within our program areas, but we can't address any and all needs. We have limited staff, and need to focus on what we do best.
stop trying to solve every problem for every person. We should concentrate on what we do well - family education, 4-H, agriculture, food safety, horticulture, youth development, leadership - and do it well consistently. Every few years we come up with a new buzzword or way of packaging our work. Let's just do the work and not worry about if our "paradigm" is new or our "deliverables" are cutting edge.
And, yes we do need to look at more soft dollars - but not to add programs we don't need. It is hard to find a grant to get a person to work as a PA in a county doing "regular" county things that are needed by clientele. We probably can get a grant to teach basketweaving, buy kits for all 3000 4-H clubs, etc. But what we really need is money to hire people to do what we do best - educate!
be active not reactive to meet clients needs
be committed to continue the services to the communities in which they serve.
Solicit more funding/grants
Be less top-down. Many of the current changes being implemented feel very much imposed by upper level administration based on what administration thinks is needed to for the organizatin to survive. I am still not convinced all the changes are good for all the people in Extension. Great for those who are on administration's list of favorites. Everyone else...get off the ship!
Become a bottom up organization. Too top heavy at present.
have a stronger Web presence.
Look at staffing based on population centers; i.e equitable ratios of staff to citizens.

recognize impact of county offices; get us a credit card machine or some way to accept debit/credit cards for programming we offer.
have an administration that relies on local focus groups, local extension advisory committee input, and educator input as to what is best for the county. If local funding with partial state funding can only supply monies to hire one and one half positions then that is all that can be hired. State wide signature programs are great but where is the material to teach them that was to be given each county to review and present to local focus groups? Decisions as to where state and some federal monies are being funneled need input from educators and county directors. Remember the local counties are being used to supply OSU, OARDC and extension with funds via the local legislators. We need the true story as to where the money is being spent. (Personnel, travel, rent, and meetings.)
Position Extension to be more relevant to urban and suburban audiences, not just rural
stay abreast of the rapidly changing landscape.
Be visible as an educational source in each community.
remember our heritage and the local folks we serve as we carry out our mission
Be realistic and relevant. some of the programs while well intentioned are not important or sometimes not of good quality and we won't say so.
Get Educators who will go out to the low income public sector who arew in need of assistance with balancing finances and with grocery shopping and meal planning on a very tight budget.
provide staff support to agents not to new signature programs.
focus its efforts where the largest number of people live.
Managing finances in a time of crisis and cut backs.
Reach out to the needs of both users and non-user of Extensions programs and become more diversified. Not everyone has access to computers and/or the Internet; so Extension should be careful to not loose the support base we have had for many years as we reach out to younger and tech saavy clientele.
adatable to change
