Non-Profit Case Study: The Times Square Alliance

The Hero:

The Times Square Alliance, founded in 1992, works to improve and promote Times Square - cultivating the creativity, energy and edge that have made the area an icon of entertainment, culture and urban life for over a century.

The Alliance promotes local businesses; encourages economic development and public improvements; co-coordinates numerous major events in Times Square (including the annual New Year's Eve and Broadway on Broadway celebrations); manages the Times Square Visitor Center; and advocates on behalf of its constituents with respect to a host of public policy, planning and quality-of-life issues.

The Challenge:

Lindsey Surbey has worked with The Times Square Alliance for over two years. Her challenge is to collect a wealth of information from different sources in an efficient manner. She needs a survey tool that is easy to use and customizable, with the ability to export and quickly analyze results.

The Solution:

The Times Square Alliance uses Zoomerang to build custom online forms and surveys to collect information from various local businesses.

Surbey explains, we help market and promote businesses in the Times Square district so we do a lot of B2B outreach. To make it easier for businesses to submit content, we've created several Zoomerang forms for our site."

She continues, "We use the custom survey templates that are provided and it's very efficient for us. We encourage the various businesses to submit their specific events and deals to the corresponding forms which we then list in the official Times Square Alliance guide. It's easy for us to download using the excel download option and then paste right into our site. Having the ability to create surveys based off of previous surveys is also very helpful."

The Times Square Alliance also hosts the annual New Year's Eve Wishing Wall, their most successful survey. The Wishing Wall was created with the idea that people all over the world would submit their wish for the New Year to be dropped along with the 2,000 pounds of confetti at the stroke of midnight on December 31. It's a way for the entire world to be a part of the historic Times Square New Year's Eve celebration.

The Results:

Times Square employees, residents, and visitors can easily view events and deals in one place as listings on the official Times Square website. Events and deals are submitted for major holidays making it effortless to keep track of special events and offers.

The results of the Wishing Wall are truly inspiring: tens of thousands of wishes in over 25 languages are collected each year. "We created a survey in French and Spanish so that we could get other countries involved," says Surbey. "We collected over 17,000 submissions for the 2011 Wishing Wall."

The Future:

As for the future, Surbey tells us, "We create new surveys all the time and have found that Zoomerang is the most user-friendly. It easily meets all of our criteria for getting the content that we need."

Surbey continues, "We closed the Wishing Wall survey for 2011 and just created a new one for 2012. We keep the online wishing wall up year round."

We asked Surbey one last question; would you recommend Zoomerang to others? She replies with an enthusiastic, "Of course, definitely."
