Social media provides an unprecedented opportunity for reaching across departments as easily as connecting around the globe. By bringing together people who share interests and direction, no matter their location, workplace learning has the potential to grow far beyond the peer-to-peer learning that has been around as long as humanity. Social media has the capacity to transform training into a learning mechanism as natural as it is powerful.

ASTD President and CEO Tony Bingham, and long-time workplace educator and Fast Company business writer Marcia Conner, are collaborating on a new book to be released in Spring, 2010 that examines the use of social media for learning. This new work will present stories and case studies of companies using social media effectively. Each chapter will address a specific social media approach and elaborate on how it leads to tacit and explicit learning.

Leveraging social software for extending and enhancing workplace learning, both within and outside of the training and development department will better positions companies to embrace the new generation coming into the workforce and provide ways for people of all ages to learn more quickly and with ease. A much anticipated resource, Tony and Marcia’s book will help organizations prepare and create a contemporary learning strategy as timely as it is compelling.
