As individuals and organizations have recognized the benefits of adopting more socially, economically, and environmentally responsible practices, the prevalence of the word "sustainability" in our culture has grown. The most common definition of sustainability comes from the United Nations Brundtland Commission Report Our Common Future (1987): Sustainable development is development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs. Operational definitions of sustainability recognize the interdependence of individuals, our economies and communities, and the environment and focus on solutions that reduce the negative environmental and social impacts of our business and day-to-day practices.
