The State of Non-Productive Time on Highly-Automated Offshore Assets: Fourth Annual International Benchmarking Study

Since 2009, Athens Group has been conducting annual surveys on control systems software-related non-productive time (NPT) on high-specification offshore drilling assets. These surveys are designed to gather benchmarking data and recommendations on how to further reduce NPT. Feedback on the reports that result from these surveys has been very positive; Drilling Contractors and Operators report that they have been using the data to make progress in achieving their NPT and safety goals.

This year's survey is designed to gather information on what respondents are currently doing to address their NPT reduction goals, what they plan to do independently and what initiatives they think are best tackled collectively. The resulting report will provide benchmarking data and will specifically answer the following questions:

  • Of the internal initiatives implemented to reduce control systems-related NPT in 2011, what worked and what didn’t?

  • What initiatives are planned to reduce control systems-related NPT in 2012?

  • In the last year, how has the oil and gas industry collaborated on reducing control systems-related NPT?

  • What were the primary causes of control systems-related NPT in 2011, where has progress been made, and what has remained status quo?
