WELD COUNTY SCHOOL DISTRICT RE-1
2012-2013/2013-2014 Academic Calendar Survey

Parent(s)/guardian(s), community members and staff members are encouraged to provide input regarding proposed 2012-2013/2013-2014 Academic Calendars.  Four calendars are proposed:  a "Traditional" calendar, very similar to the 2011-12; a "4-day week" calendar; a "Labor Day to Memorial Day" calendar and a "Year-Round/Balanced" calendar.  All four proposed calendars can be found on the school district's web site (www.weld-re1.k12.co.us).

Access to an online survey can be gained by logging onto the Weld RE-1 website and clicking on the Weld RE-1 Calendar Survey button, then follow the link to the Weld RE-1 Academic Calendar Survey.  A paper version of the survey may be requested and sent home with your student by calling any school building.

* The State of Colorado is continuing to cut funding to K-12 Education.  School districts across the state are being forced to make cuts to their budgets again for 2012-13. Weld County School District RE-1 is investigating a four day school week as one possible way to save money. (Please see web page for proposed "Four-Day Week Calendar")  This could potentially save the school district approximately $300,000. A four day week would mean a longer school day (8:05 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.) in order to meet the state requirement of 1080 hours for student/teacher contact. The proposed four day week calendar utilizes Tuesday through Friday for the four day week.  Students would not attend school on Mondays.  The school year would start August 14th and end June 6th. Would you be in favor of a four day school week?

A Labor Day to Memorial Day calendar would mean a longer school day (8:05 a.m. to 3:15 p.m.) in order to meet the state requirement of 1080 hours for student/teacher contact. The school year would start September 4th and end May 23rd.  Would you be in favor of a Labor Day to Memorial Day calendar?

* In addition to the calendars mentioned previously, Weld County School District RE-1 is investigating a Year-Round/Balanced calendar. (Please see the Weld RE-1 web site for proposed "Year-Round/Balanced Calendar")  This calendar has no cost saving benefits. A Year-Round/Balanced calendar would mean a school day beginning at 8:10 a.m. and ending at 3:00 p.m.  The school year would start July 23rd and end June 14th. Students would attend school for nine weeks at time a have three-four weeks off in between.  Would you be in favor of a Year-Round/Balanced calendar?
