Use Skip Logic to Route Survey Respondents

Sometimes when you are creating your online survey, you need to ask different questions to respondents based on how they answer prior questions. For example, if you are asking customers how frequently they use your product; you may want to ask the group who are daily users one set of questions, and the group who are infrequent users another.  In order to avoid sending different surveys to these separate groups, it is best to use survey skip logic.

Survey logic or survey branching logic, as it sometimes called, is a straightforward way to route respondents through your survey. There are two types of basic skip logic that most self-service survey solutions provide: skip unconditionally and skip based on a response. Add the skip unconditionally rule to your survey to skip a group of survey respondents over pages that are not relevant to them. Suppose you have a question on page 1 that asks for satisfaction with a service, a question on page 2 that asks why people are satisfied, a question on page 3 that asks why people are dissatisfied, and a question on page 4 that should be asked of all respondents. Respondents who indicate that they are satisfied on page 1 should go to page 2. However, they should skip over page 3, which is intended for respondents who indicate that they are dissatisfied on page 1. In this case, you would set up unconditional logic on page 2 so that everyone who arrives at that page will be routed to page 4.

When you want to base the next question a respondent sees on their answer to a prior question, the skip by question logic is the right feature to use. Using the example above, the respondents who answered the question on page 1 by stating they are dissatisfied with the service would need to be skipped to page 3 to answer the question about why they are dissatisfied. You would accomplish this by adding skip by question functionality to your survey.

 5 Survey Logic Best Practices

  • Questions that include skip logic should be mandatory.
  • Create all questions and pages and map out the skip logic before actually setting the skip logic in the survey.
  • Questions that have skip logic should be the last question on the page.
  • Always test all of the skip sequences in the survey carefully before launching the survey
  • Skip Logic can never go backwards in the survey -- only forward.
