New Year’s Eve Confetti Over Times Square Carries Your Wish, Literally.

It’s time for hopes and desires to culminate yet again as we usher in 2011 at the world’s most famous New Year’s Eve celebration. The illustrious Time’s Square Ball drops at the stroke of midnight, signaling the crowd to join in the largest karaoke version ever of the Scottish classic “Auld Lang Syne”. One ton of confetti is released over the wishful crowd including tens of thousands of messages submitted to the New Year’s Eve Wishing Wall. We think this is a remarkable idea and we are flattered they are using Zoomerang to collect submissions from around the world.

Initiated in 2007, The Wishing Wall was created with the idea that people all over the world would submit their wish for the New Year to be dropped along with the 2000 pounds of confetti at the stroke of midnight on December 31. It’s a way for the entire world to be a part of the historic Times Square New Year’s Eve celebration.

So how do they do it?

The Times Square Alliance, founded in 1992, collects tens of thousands of wishes in over 25 different languages. Visitors post their messages on multicolored notes to The New Year’s Eve Wishing Wall located in the Times Square Visitor Center in New York City. The wall stays up year round and each time it is full, the wishes are taken down and saved.

Can’t make it to Times Square?

No worries, your wishes can still flutter from the sky this New Year’s Eve. Using Zoomerang online surveys, the Times Square Alliance is collecting submissions online from people who cannot make it to the city. The wishes will be downloaded, printed and cut into small pieces and then mixed into the 1 ton of confetti that will rain down onto the crowd at midnight.

Here are a few of the actual wishes that have been submitted:

  • "Want to be mother"
  • "To see my children grow up healthy and happy!"
  • "I wanna travel the world"...
  • "I wish that people would stop polluting the Earth."
  • "A cure for cancer • I want to get into grad school. Hook 'em Horns!"
  • "For my wife to get a fantastic job....she deserves it."
  • "Snow in Florida"
  • "Go to Disney Land"

If you would like to submit your wish, you can do so online right here. No matter where you are on New Year's Eve, your wish will be part of the Times Square celebration. Happy New Year!

The Times Square Alliance, founded in 1992, works to improve and promote Times Square - cultivating the creativity, energy and edge that have made the area an icon of entertainment, culture and urban life for over a century.
